Boiano is a surname.
Bojano is a variant written with a j, instead of an i.
Anyway in Italian there is no difference because the pronunciation
is the same.
Even
if it's similar to other surnames, Boiano has a well defined
history.
It origined from Molise, an Italian region, and more precisely
from Bojano village, in Campobasso province.
The
Bojano surname is not so widespread in Italy. It is concentrated
above all in the Campania
region, in those villages
in the
Matese Massif which belong to Caserta province.
This
fact demonstrates the very close connection between the Bojano
surname and the Bojano village. During the past times, people
who lived in Bojano moved in the Matese mountains and here
they took root, particularly in the village of San Gregorio
Matese. With time the reference to the origin has vanished.
So if at the beginning people said "Antonio who comes
from Bojano" later they said "Antonio from Bojano"
up to "Antonio Bojano".
In
the old registers, the Bojano surname is always written with
a j according both to the ancient way of writing and
to the grammar rule requiring a j between two vowels.
With time this rule has disappeared, in fact at the beginning
of the twentieth century there were many Boianos with a normal
i. Anyway the origin is the same and this is proved
by the name of Bojano village still written with a j.
